Ebenezer Christian Methodist Episcopal Church is one of several Christian Methodist Episcopal Churches located in Southside Virginia. We are blessed to provide a variety of spiritual, educational, cultural and outreach ministries to help in meeting the needs of our members, as well as others in the community.
We strongly believe in providing opportunities for young children, youth and young adults to help them develop mentally and spiritually and to help them develop meaningful skills. They actively participate in Sunday School, worship services, conferences and other church activities of their interest. Our leaders and members are mentors and role models who embrace them with love, support, encouragement and assistance wherever needed.
We invite you to come and visit us! We feel that you will enjoy the warm and inviting atmosphere of a church “where God is loved.” There are many opportunities for you to serve and grow in a relationship with Christ and the church family. The church doors are always open to growing the Kingdom of God.
Ebenezer Christian Methodist Episcopal Church family, I love you all!
“Walking by Faith with God as the Pilot,” the forefathers of Ebenezer Christian Methodist Episcopal Church had a spiritual insight into what their Heavenly Father desired of His people, and thus sparked the church’s origin in 1878 when the congregation first began conducting worship services outdoors beneath an arbor.
Its origin is credited to founders William Banks, Paul Carter, Lewis Carter and Lewis Pate who organized the first worship services in the Dickerson Community of the Washington City area of South Boston, Virginia. The first pastor was Reverend Blount of California.
Later, a log structure made of stone and sand was erected on a 150 X 213 ft. plot of property donated by Elijah Hodges on North Main Street, South Boston. Mrs. Charlotte Hamilton and Mrs. Anna Smith were the coordinators.
In 1896, a small wood building was constructed which replaced the first log cabin structure.
In 1910, an educational Outreach Program was launched by Mrs. Sally D. Woods, and later in 1913 expansion of the program included the dedication of Williams Normal and Industrial Institute located on North Main Street.
In 1926, another new structure of the church was erected under the leadership of Reverend Munsell Moon and W. W. McCollough on what is the present location of Ebenezer. Years later in 1948, the educational annex expansion began under the leadership of Bishop W. Y. Bell, Interim Pastor.
January 5, 1964, was a sad and tearful night at Ebenezer. The first brick structure was destroyed by a GREAT FIRE! However, through it all, worship services and other church activities were continued in the educational annex until in 1968, under the leadership of Pastor Colonel T.R. Owens and the Building Committee; Mr. Fred J. Carrington, Chairperson; Mr. Levi Hamilton, Sr., treasurer; Mrs. Dollye Kent Ragland, Secretary; Mrs. Luci Jones Booker and Mrs. Mildred K. Yancy, Program Coordinators, construction of the present edifice was begun.
1969 was a glorious year! On February 9, the new edifice was formally opened and dedicated. The pastor was Reverend J. M. Blassingame. 1975 was even more glorious year! Praises to God! June 22, was the “Burning of the Church Mortgage!” The pastor was Reverend J. L. Farrar; Mrs. Grace Wills and Mrs. W. Y. Bell were the program coordinators.
Renovation projects have continued through the years. In 1988, under the leadership of Pastor Kenneth E. Jones, the Fellowship Hall was completed and dedicated. In 1994, renovation projects of the educational annex and the sanctuary were completed and rededicated on October 9, under the leadership of Reverend George T. French, Jr. Through the years Ebenezer has been blessed with many persons who have given of themselves, tirelessly and have performed the duties and services of God with dignity and precision.
One of Ebenezer’s formal pastors described Ebenezer as a place where the dejected, despaired, and downtrodden can seek refuge, and the spiritually depleted can find hope and rejuvenation. It is a place where anyone wanting to develop a right relationship with God can come and work until soul contentment happens
EBENEZER CHRISTIAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH is striving to be a church of believers who believe in Jesus Christ with emphasis on biblical teachings and life applications, developing outreach ministries of love and mercy with a focus on spreading the Good News and making disciples for Christ.
